How to License a Trademark
In many cases you will have people that want to use your trademark in other services or products. You (Licensor) can license a trademark by creating an agreement with others (Licensee) that want to use your trademark. You can contact your local attorney to assist with the legal documentation
Trademark Licensing means to have someone else use your trademark (brand, patent etc.) by renting or leasing. Person who licenses the trademark is called “Licensor” and person who takes the trademark to use for his or her products or services is called “Licensee”. Licensing gives an opportunity to the trademark owner to maximize the potential of the trademark and it gives an opportunity to licensee to maximize the potential of their products or services.
Licensing Agreement Parties:<
Mostly the licensing agreements are between a Licensor and a Licensee for example Mercedes Benz is a licensor but many other products besides cars have Mercedes Benz logo which means that Licensor Mercedes Benz has license agreement with many other product or service categories companies who are Licensees. Sometime a well-known brand can have hundreds of licensees.
Licensing Agreement Duration:
All licensing agreements are governed by a license contract which defines and determines the terms between Licensor and Licensee. Most agreements are for a limited period of time for example 3 to 5 years as the initial term but have the renewal options.
Licensing Agreement Region:
Licensing agreement usually define a region for the agreement for example a licensor can decide to have a different licensee for each of the region even sometime for the same product or service categories.

Licensing Industry Merchandiser's Association also known as LIMA is the the main international professional association for brand licensing.
The Society of Product Licensors Committed to Excellence (SPLiCE) is a Licensors Community who share and defines the best practices for protecting, promoting and enhancing brand integrity.
