“How can you say one style is better than another? You ought to be able to be an Abstract Expressionist or a Pop artist, or a realist, without feeling you’ve given up something.” – Andy Warhol
Thomas Jacob Tommy Hilfiger an American fashion designer has a similar kind of a thought process when it comes to his sense of fashion and designing. Best known for founding the lifestyle brand Tommy Hilfiger Corporation in 1985, he started his career by co-founding a chain of record stores in upstate New York in the 1970s. He began designing preppy for his own eponymous menswear line in the 1980s. The company later expanded into women’s clothing and various luxury items such as perfumes, and went public in 1992. Hilfiger published his first book, titled All American: A Style Book in 1997 and went on writing several other books like Hilfiger’s memoir, American Dreamer: My Life in Fashion & Business.
Tommy Hilfiger, a lifelong fan of rock and roll and pop culture fashion, often influenced fashion of music subcultures in his designs. The clothes are also marketed in connection with the music industry, with celebrities such as American R&B. Hilfiger has also sponsored several musical events. Hilfiger’s style of clothing was popular with both the American “preppy” scene and as hip hop fashion. Hip hop fashion at large began incorporating the Hilfiger brand in the 1990s and when Snoop Doggy wore a Hilfiger sweatshirt during an appearance on Saturday Night Live, it sold out of New York City stores the next day. Moreover, Hilfiger courted the new hip hop market, and rappers like Puffy and Coolio walked during his runways shows. Specific items like Tommy Hilfiger carpenter jeans became particularly popular, with the trademark logo displayed on the hammer loop. Rock & roll is about sensual transcendence, uproarious sounds and incredible visual drama. As the lights come up and the band hits the stage, the first impression is all about what the musicians are playing and what they’re wearing. Now Tommy Hilfiger is the most embraced and popular fashion designer among the musicians with his compelling revue of rock style-the clothes musicians have worn for the stage and camera since 1950s for the sheer and outrageous fun in its design. From the patched jeans and fringe leather of Neil Young to the chameleon like transformations of David Bowie, the looks have defined musicians as an integral part of their message and artistic identity as their music.
Hilfiger continues to maintain multiple fashion lines, some focused on wearable “casual” clothes while other designs take on various haute couture commissions. Aside from the preppy styles of his youth, Hilfiger have always been influenced by the style of a wide variety of American icons, including Grace Kelly, James Dean, Deborah Harry, Iggy Pop, Farrah Fawcett, Steve McQueen, Jackie and John F. Kennedy, and Andy Warhol. Many of his designs draw prominently from the styles of hard rock and the pop music industry.
Drawing on an assembly of brilliant, many rarely seen images from rock’s best photographers, Hilfiger guides readers through the wild visual world of artists whose sartorial coolness has defined what’s hip. Focusing on the icons of rock, hip-hop, pop and R&B who have daringly pushed the edges of fashion and set trends-icons like Jimi Hendrix, Mick Jagger, David Bowie, Madonna and Prince–Hilfiger offers unique insights and sharp anecdotes to tell the ongoing and ever-evolving story of rock style
